Constitutional Court Judge Prof. Dr Ernest Petrič to Visit International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg

In his capacity as President of the UN International Law Commission, Prof. Dr Ernest Petrič, Judge of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia, will be visiting the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), Hamburg, from 9 - 10 March 2010 upon the invitation of its President Jose Luis Jesus.

Prof. Dr. Erik Kerševan Appointed Secretary General of the Constitutional Court

The judges of the Constitutional Court have at an administrative session on 28 January 2010 appointed Prof. Dr. Erik Kerševan as Secretary General of the Court. The new Secretary General assumeed office on 1 February 2010.

Vice President of the Constitutional Court

In accordance with the second paragraph of Article 10 of the Constitutional Court Act, the Vice President of the Constitutional Court is elected by the Constitutional Court judges from among their own number in the same manner and for the same term as the President of the Constitutional Court, i.e. by secret ballot for a term of three years.

Mag. Jadranka Sovdat Assumes Office as Constitutional Court Judge

On 19 December 2009, Mag. Jadranka Sovdat assumed the office of judge of the Constitutional Court, replacing Judge Prof. Dr Ciril Ribičič, whose term of office expired on that day.

Mag. Jadranka Sovdat became judge rapporteur in all open cases which had been assigned to Judge Prof. Dr Ciril Ribičič and will also be taking part in the work of the panel that examines constitutional complaints in the field of criminal law.

The Constitutional Court Is Celebrating the Constitutionality Day

The Constitutional Court assumes the role of guardian of constitutionality; it is the highest body of the judiciary for the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, which form the core of the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia. This year, as every year, the Court prepared a special ceremony to mark the Constitutionality Day, which it traditionally celebrates to honour the day of the proclamation of the Constitution, the supreme and ultimate reference in the constitutional adjudication.

Upon the invitation of the President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia, Mr Jože Tratnik, a delegation from the Constitutional Court of Austria led by President Dr Gerhart Holzinger paid a two-day official visit to the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia. The delegation included Vice-President Dr Brigitte Bierlein, Judges Dr Herbert Haller and Dr Claudia Kahr and Secretary General Ms Britta Wagner.

During a four-day official visit to the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Mr Jean-Paul Costa, met with the judges of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia for discussions held on Tuesday, 13 October 2009. Prof. Dr Boštjan M. Zupančič, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, and Mr Michael O'Boyle, Deputy Registrar, also participated in the discussions.
